A small company has succeeded in attracting users from all over the globe
Tokyo-based Lang-8, Inc. announces that their global Q&A app for language and culture exchange reached 10,000,000 MAU on December 12th, 2019.
HiNative is a Q&A app for language and culture exchange. The app enables users from across the globe to ask speakers of the language they’re learning language-related questions. Users can also ask questions related to cultures and countries and citizens of those countries can answer them. As part of the Q&A community, users answer questions and share their opinions with other users interested in their own language(s) and about their country. Currently users come from 232 countries and communicate with each other in 113 languages. During the period of November 12th – December 12th, HiNative hit a milestone after reaching 10,000,000 monthly active users (MAU) worldwide.
HiNative was launched in 2014 with the vision of creating “a language platform for everyone”. Many language learning services center around the study of English. The goal of HiNative was to create a language learning platform for speakers of all world languages to learn about any language or culture they wish. By not focusing on one language or offering services to Japanese speakers only, HiNative has succeeded in attracting users from all corners of the globe.
The MAU in November 2016 was 615,963; 3,466,246 in 2017; 4,834,766 in 2018; and in 2019 reached 10,000,000 users worldwide. The company’s goal for 2020 is to achieve 30,000,000 MAU before the year ends. In 2021, the company hopes to see 100,000,000 MAU in the last months of the year. To hit these numbers, Lang-8 is making improvements to HiNative that encourage users to ask and answer more questions. The company is also working on improving functions that enable native speakers to indicate when answers given by fellow native speakers are credible. These functions make it much easier for language learners to determine which responses are best.
