TOKYO, JAPAN – April 28, 2022 – The Norwegian Seafood Council in Japan announced the global launch of the online game “Nordic Combined Seafood Cup” today to help consumers learn more about Seafood from Norway, starting with salmon and mackerel.

The Nordic Combined Seafood Cup is a free online game that you can play on your smartphone, tablet, or computer which features the “Norwegian Salmon Cross-Country Skiing” game and the “Norwegian Mackerel Ski Jumping” game. In Norwegian Salmon Cross-Country Skiing, the salmon powerfully kicks and glides through the snowy mountains of Norway to cross the finish line in time. In Norwegian Mackerel Ski Jumping, the mackerel majestically soars high in the sky to make the biggest jump. The rules of the game are simple – all you have to do is to tap the screen and answer four quiz questions to complete the cross-country ski game with the fastest time or the ski jumping game with the farthest jump. However, your knowledge on salmon, mackerel, and their origin story will be tested, and only with the correct answers to the quiz will you be able to speed up for better results.

“We are thrilled to finally announce the global launch of our new game. Norway is a country far from Japan, and even though our salmon and mackerel have long been loved by the Japanese consumers, awareness of our country, our seafood, and our origin story is still an ongoing challenge. In a recent survey we found that 35% of the Japanese respondents associate Norway with Seafood and 15% with winter sports. By combining Seafood and Sports we have now created an educational tool that engage and challenge within both categories.” said Johan Kvalheim, Country Director for Japan of the Norwegian Seafood Council.

Nordic combined is a two-sport competition that originated in Norway in which athletes compete in both cross-country skiing and ski jumping. The demanding sport requires a balance of power, endurance, efficiency, detailed technique, and cold climate – all which are characteristics that resemble Norwegian fisheries and aquaculture. Norway is very cold, and while this may create some challenges for humans, the conditions are perfect for salmon and mackerel. Blessed with the cold environment that nurtures the fish, the people, the culture, and the science connected together has made Norway one of the world’s biggest and most sustainable producers of seafood today.
