He was born in Tokyo in 1940. In 1963 he graduated from Tokyo University faculty of engineering and the following year entered the Ministry of Finance. In 1972 he got his Ph.D at Yale University. He worked as a professor at Hitotsubashi University and Tokyo University (Head of Research Center for Advanced Science and Technology), as well as a visiting professor at Stanford University. In 2005 he started working at Waseda University Graduate School of Finance Accounting and Law as a professor and since 2011 as an advisor of Finance Research Center. Since September 2017 he has been working as an advisor of Waseda University Institute for Business and Finance and emeritus professor of Hitotsubashi University.
