October 25th, 2013 – Yusen Real Estate Corporation (YFK; head office: Tokyo; president: Masato Katayama), an NYK Group company, has received the Project Award given by the Real Estate Journalists Association of Japan (REJA)* at the association’s third annual awards ceremony in Tokyo on October 24. The award was presented in recognition of YFK’s two brownout activities that were implemented immediately after the Great East Japan Earthquake. The ceremony was attended by YFK president Masato Katayama.
This award was established by REJA to recognize CSR activities, and it is presented by the journalists to a company contributing to the development of the real estate business.
YFK’s “Win-win Brownout” activity was implemented in fiscal 2011 when serious energy savings were needed in response to the impact of the Great East Japan Earthquake. Yusen Real Estate requested its tenants to share information and cooperate with building brownouts to drastically reduce energy consumption. As a result, energy use from July to September 2011 was reduced by about 30 percent, significantly contributing to the fiscal 2011 target of 15 percent less use than the previous year. In the end, this electricity savings in communal areas allowed YFK to reduce its tenants’ electricity bills by 13 million yen.
In fiscal 2012, YFK introduced an additional brownout activity called “We’re on the same boat.” In this activity, rising electricity expenses were not passed on to tenants. Instead, the basic charge for contracted power was reduced and rising prices were absorbed through the tenants’ cooperation with the brownout. In the end, this activity allowed 20 million yen in cost to be controlled.
Yusen Real Estate Corporation is committed to continuing its efforts to achieve results through people-driven activities, in addition to technological and mechanical advancements.
