Astamuse to Enter Into a Corporate Evaluation Score Agreement with Mitsubishi UFJ Trust and Banking Corporation and Begin Support for SDGs Funds

-Providing Logic for Determining Mid- to Long-term Growth Areas and Competitiveness Assessment Scores for Intangible Assets-

astamuse (head office: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo, President & CEO: Ayumu Nagai, hereinafter “astamuse”) has begun collaborations with the Mitsubishi UFJ Trust and Banking Corporation (head office: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo, President & CEO: Iwao Nagashima, hereinafter “Mitsubishi UFJ Trust and Banking”) on the management of a fund aimed at solving social issues (hereinafter “Global SDGs Innovator Fund (tentative)”) handling globally listed stocks.
As part of their collaboration, the companies have entered into an agreement where astamuse is to provide logic for selecting areas for medium- to long-term growth using the inflow of R&D subsidies, and competitiveness evaluation scores on stocks based on their intangible assets.

The use of alternative data in investment strategies and asset management has gained momentum, particularly among overseas financial institutions. It has also begun to see use within Japan as well.

In addition, in the Japanese capital market, the Stewardship Code and the revision of the Corporate Governance Code has led to an increase in discussions on intangible assets.

With this backdrop, astamuse began working with Mitsubishi UFJ Trust and Banking in 2019 to develop and test a fund management method using data on intangible assets. Specifically, the method uses the following process to select areas of medium- to long-term growth, as well as listed stocks that contribute to SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals).

・Creating logic to use astamuse’s proprietary data on the inflow of global R&D subsidies  combined with corporate R&D expenditures, to select areas predicted to have good growth medium- to long-term

・Defining and scoring methods to assess the competitiveness of intangible assets (patents) for each growth area, based on the unique characteristics of each area

Having confirmed the efficacy of the logic and data in investment decision making, astamuse will enter into an agreement to provide information gained via the logic and data with Mitsubishi UFJ Trust and Banking starting June 2021. Mitsubishi UFJ Trust and Banking will establish a Global SDGs Innovator Fund (tentative name) using this logic and data. The fund will be the first of its kind in Japan, and is to use patent and R&D subsidy data as its primary data source.

After the fund begins, they will have regular discussions and reviews with Mitsubishi UFJ Trust and Banking on data utilization and make every effort to manage the fund to create medium- to long-term performance improvement.
