Black Duck Announces Japanese Version of Protex Open Source Software License Compliance Solution

BURLINGTON, Mass., October 7, 2013 and TOKYO, Japan, October 8, 2013 – Black Duck Software, the trusted partner for open source software adoption, management and governance, today announced the availability of the Japanese version of Black Duck® Protex™, the company’s flagship software scanning and analysis product. Developed in response to the pronounced and growing use of open source software (OSS) in Japan, this localized version of the Black Duck open source code analysis and governance solution is now available.

Protex, the industry’s leading solution for managing open source compliance, integrates with existing development tools to automatically scan, discover and identify software origins. This integral step in the development process is essential for managing license compliance and meeting corporate policy requirements.

“As a business partner of Black Duck since 2007, NEC has realized growth in OSS adoption and increasing awareness of the need for OSS governance among Japanese customers,” said Yuji Muroya, Assistant General Manager, IT Platform Division, NEC Corporation. “We are pleased to be an early adopter of the Japanese version of Protex, and expect that it will help Japanese companies further accelerate their use of OSS, resulting in more efficient software development.”

Protex, which taps the world’s largest library of open source project data – the Black Duck® KnowledgeBase™, helps development organizations complete software projects on-time and on-budget by automatically analyzing software contents, providing a bill of materials, uncovering potential licensing risks early in the development cycle, and identifying due diligence-related concerns well in advance of an audit.

“Open source software empowers developers to increase innovation and efficiency by building upon others’ work,” said Shoken Kim, Regional Director, Asia Pacific, Black Duck. “As OSS becomes more pervasive and development becomes more social, the need for governance and compliance solutions increases exponentially, and it is more important than ever to ensure developers use approved, compliant code, automatically vetted and managed within their development process.”

The Japanese version of Protex is available from Black Duck’s six resellers, including NEC Corporation, and also as part of the Black Duck® Suite™, a comprehensive, automated approach to governance and compliance integrated across the application development and DevOps lifecycles.
